We are studying the Concept of Number Sense. How big a number is in relation to others. Also included in this is the properties of numbers. This means that there are ways to describe numbers. They can be even, odd, prime, composite, a factor of other numbers for example. This is kind of like what strudents have learned about reading. There are letters, that make sounds and those letters may make different sounds when combined with others. Numbers are the same way. Only I have learned that they make more sense! Their properties are always the same!! If reading were like this we could all spell so easily!

At home, the best way to help studetns understand the size or an amount that a number, fraction or a decimal represents is to MEASURE. Length, width, fraction of an inch or cups are all units can be using at home.
